Mountains, Meals, and Magic: A Window-Seat Adventure on The Rocky Mountaineer

Recently MMV was invited on a magical adventure to experience how luxury and train travel truly go hand-in-hand, on a rail route with Rocky Mountaineer. Of course, we said "YES!" So, we packed our bags and headed to Vancouver to catch our train.

Check out what our agents Karen and Luciana thought of Rocky Mountaineer and hear a little bit about their journey.

Imagine crossing Canada’s most spectacular landscapes - passing towering mountains, winding rivers, turquoise lakes, and witnessing dramatic canyons and wilderness, without ever touching your suitcase or having to map out a rental car route. That’s the Rocky Mountaineer experience in a nutshell: luxury train travel that somehow feels effortless.

From the moment you arrive, you can feel the excitement in the air. You know you’re in for something special when the bagpipes begin playing, the red carpet rolls out, and the white glove service kicks off a journey that feels magical from the very first step.

Your luggage? Tagged and handled for you. It is magically transported from your hotel room in the morning and reappears in your hotel room at your next stop. On our journey, the bags arrived in the room before we did! Interesting fact: your checked luggage does not travel on the train with you- it travels by luggage truck or motorcoach, and by the time you arrive, your luggage has been delivered to your room.

You don’t sleep on the train—you stay overnight in comfortable hotel beds. You will get your room keys onboard the motorcoach to your hotel or in the hotel lobby. No need to check in or wait around for your room or luggage. Every day is dedicated to your relaxation and just sitting back watching the world unfold outside your panoramic windows.

We traveled the historic route: First Passage to the West, from Vancouver to Banff, and it delivered in every way. You start in coastal lushness, weave through river-carved canyons, then rise into the rugged and breathtaking Canadian Rockies. You’ll witness everything from Hell’s Gate to Kicking Horse River while you traverse spiral tunnels - completed in 1909, blasted through mountain stone. The scenery becomes more breathtaking with every mile!

The GoldLeaf service takes it up a notch - double-decker dome cars, a full dining room downstairs, and an outdoor viewing platform that’s like a balcony to the wild. For a once in a lifetime experience, or for those who appreciate luxury done right, GoldLeaf is absolutely worth the upgrade

But how good could the food be from a galley kitchen on a train? Extraordinary! Meals are not just meals- they’re locally-sourced, chef-prepared celebrations of Canadian flavors. Think Alberta beef, BC salmon, and wines from the Okanagan Valley. Every bite is as delightful as the scenery.

And the drinks? Included. Which leads to one of our favorite traditions that we deemed: ‘Aperol Spritz O’clock’! Every afternoon, we would raise a glass and toast to the views, and somehow, sipping a sparkling orange cocktail while gliding past rushing rivers and snow-capped peaks made the whole thing feel surreal in the best possible way.

What should you pack? Layers are your friend. Mornings start early and cool, but those big dome windows warm up quickly. The train cars are air-conditioned, which felt nice and comfortable to us, but could feel cool to others. Flat, stable shoes are a must -the train does sway, and there is a narrow staircase that leads to the downstairs dining car and observation platform, as well as the ultra-clean bathrooms. A small pack with your meds, chargers, sunglasses, and a camera is all you need. Honestly, you won’t want to look away from the view long enough to read a book - plus you may miss the fast and frenzied, “Bear on the left!!” sightings.

There’s no Wi-Fi. You won’t miss it.

The onboard hosts are incredible - sharing stories, spotting wildlife, offering drinks, snacks, and more snacks. You’ll be full but never stuffed. Satisfied but never rushed. And when you finally pull into Banff, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped into a postcard.

With optional, exciting pre- and post-stays and excursions to bucket-list places like Lake Louise and Yoho National Park (which we didn’t even touch on here for brevity's sake), Rocky Mountaineer is a game-changer. It’s not just transportation - it's an unforgettable travel experience where the journey is the destination.
