Cruising is already an adventure, but Norwegian Cruise Line takes the excitement to another level... Literally! Imagine racing around a track high above the ocean while enjoying the views from the top deck of your cruise ship.

A wide view of the Norwegian Bliss’s top deck featuring its signature go‑kart track, with winding black-and-white racing lanes bordered by safety railings, set against the open sky and ocean backdrop.

What started as a groundbreaking idea aboard Norwegian Joy has grown into one of Norwegian Cruise Line’s signature thrills at sea. Today, guests can get behind the wheel aboard Norwegian Bliss, Norwegian Joy, Norwegian Encore, Norwegian Prima and Norwegian Viva.

And these aren’t your average go-karts. Norwegian’s Speedway tracks feature multiple levels, hairpin turns and the chance to race your fellow cruisers while sailing across the ocean. Whether you’re a serious racing fan or just looking for a little extra adrenaline on vacation, here are seven things you may not know about Norwegian’s racetracks at sea!

1. The Idea Came From the CEO’s Grandkids

Norwegian Cruise Line has a reputation for innovation, and the racetrack is a perfect example. When Norwegian Bliss was being developed, Frank del Rio, CEO of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, asked his grandchildren what they would want to see on a new cruise ship. Their answer? A racetrack!

2. It Was a First at Sea

A racetrack on a cruise ship? Talk about thinking outside the box! When Norwegian introduced the concept, it was completely unique. No other cruise ship could boast this kind of thrilling experience on the top deck.

Today, the experience can be found aboard Norwegian Bliss, Norwegian Encore, Norwegian Joy, Norwegian Prima and Norwegian Viva, giving guests even more opportunities to experience the thrill of racing at sea.

3. The Racetracks Are Actually Competitive

This isn’t simply a leisurely lap around the ship! Norwegian’s racetracks are designed to offer an authentic racing experience, complete with race-car engine sounds piped through speakers located in the car’s headrest.

The tracks also feature a viewing platform for spectators, a covered pit lane, floodlights and a timing system, so you can see exactly how your driving skills stack up when you’re racing for the checkered flag.

4. You Can Go Impressively Fast

Ready to put the pedal to the metal? The innovative race cars feature four speeds, making the experience suitable for everyone from novice to advanced drivers. Racers can reach speeds of up to 30 miles per hour while navigating the track’s twists and turns.

And there’s an added burst of excitement for those who want to take things up a notch.
During each lap, which lasts approximately eight minutes, drivers can activate a special “turbo boost” for an extra jump in acceleration.

5. The Race Cars Are Electric

Here’s a fun fact you might not expect: the race cars are electric! Drivers still get the authentic sounds of revving engines and gearing down as they approach corners, but those sounds are only heard by the racers themselves.

That’s because Norwegian’s Race Tracks use eco-friendly electric cars, allowing guests to enjoy the excitement without disturbing passengers who may prefer a quieter day at sea.

6. You’re Racing With Ocean Views

There are plenty of places to race on land, but how many offer a view like this?
Norwegian’s race tracks are located outdoors and offer an incredible backdrop as you navigate the course.

On the two-level tracks, racers can enjoy wide-open ocean views as they navigate the twists and turns. And aboard Norwegian Prima, the experience goes even bigger with the first three-level race track at sea, spanning Decks 18, 19 and 20.

7. Norwegian Bliss Has Two Customized Cars by Alex Vega

Norwegian Bliss takes its race cars to another level with two customized vehicles created by Alex Vega and his team at Avorza.

Vega is known for customizing vehicles for professional athletes and celebrities, and fans may also recognize him from the popular show The Auto Firm with Alex Vega.
The show was invited to bring its signature tricked-out style to Norwegian Bliss and create two custom race cars. The entire process was even featured in an episode of the television show.

From the first race track at sea aboard Norwegian Joy to the three-level Speedway aboard Norwegian Prima, Norwegian Cruise Line has continued to take racing at sea to the next level.
